Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City broke ground on Monday, October 24th on their new cancer center. This new facility is set to open next year to replace the current center built over 20 years ago.

On October 18th, Congressman Smith met with Iron County leaders to discuss national and local issues over lunch at the new Palate Deli and Grill in Ironton.
On October 18th, Congressman Smith visited the new Amtrak stop in Arcadia Valley. Preliminary plans are to have the grand opening for the new stop on Friday, November 18th 2016.
On Tuesday October 18th, Congressman Smith visited Crane Lake in Iron County to meet with Mark Twain Forest Supervisor Sherri Shwenke and others. After draining half of the lake and discovering damage to the dam, the forest service is studying Crane Lake to determine how to best restore the area for recreation.
Tyson Zimmer of Van Buren won multiple awards including prettiest pumpkin in the Missouri Pumpkin Challenge for his whopping 650.5 pound pumpkin he grew in just 80 days. Zimmer grew this pumpkin in loving memory of his mother who recently passed away. Check out this impressive pumpkin on display at the Carter County Courthouse in Van Buren.
Congratulations to Dr.Edward Dumontier, the first recipient of the Joyce Buchheit Excellence in Health Care Award. As he retires from private practice, Dr. Dumontier, a veteran himself, will work at veterans clinics in Farmington and Salem. Thank you for your service to the Farmington community and now to our veterans.
The 15th Annual Madison County Fair kicked off on Thursday and runs through this weekend. I encourage folks to attend this family-fun event that has activities for all ages including a 5K Color Run to benefit Relay for Life, live music performances, face painting and a livestock show.
Thank you to the Poplar Bluff Garden Club for graciously donating a Blue Star Memorial marker to recognize the service and sacrifice of our nation's veterans that was installed on the grounds of the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center on Saturday.
