WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Jason Smith’s (R-MO) two amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would have improved the safety of the American people were blocked by Speaker Pelosi from being considered by the U.S. House of Representatives this week. One of Smith’s amendments would have removed language inserted by Speaker Pelosi that blocks the President’s ability to use military construction funds to build the wall along the southern border of the United States. His other amendment would have included long standing prohibitions on the transfer or release of terrorists detained in Guantanamo Bay on U.S. soil or the closure of the facility.

Smith spoke about how these two commonsense proposals would have protected the American people from criminals and drugs entering into our country from Mexico and would have ensured that terrorists were not released on American soil.

“There is no greater responsibility for the government than to ensure the safety of the American people from foreign threats,” said Congressman Smith. “Unfortunately, Speaker Pelosi blocked my amendments that would have protected American lives because she apparently has no issue with criminals or terrorists being unleashed on American cities. After all, she continues to fail to speak out against the violence taking place in cities across our country.”

“A strong national defense begins with enforcing our border and keeping terrorists out of our country,” Smith continued. “Despite this latest act of obstruction by the hostile Left, I will continue to work with President Trump and his administration to ensure we provide the national security American families deserve.”
