This week, Congressman Jason Smith voted to correct some of the biggest flaws of the Obamacare law. While Congressman Smith will continue to push for a full repeal of the law, the Hire More Heroes Act and Save American Workers Act will relieve several obstacles to getting Americans back to work again.
“Although President Obama is not likely to admit how truly devastating the law is, I do not want to settle for anything short of a full repeal of Obamacare,” Congressman Smith said. “In the meantime, however, we are going to do everything we can to at least alleviate burdens that the law has placed on job creators and families.
“The Hire More Heroes Act repeals a piece of Obamacare, while encouraging employers to hire veterans. The Save American Workers Act also repeals a piece of Obamacare, changing the definition of a full-time worker back to 40 hours. Although it is not the full repeal we are working toward, it is a step in the right direction and will help get folks back to work.”
Congressman Smith is an original cosponsor of the Hire More Heroes Act. The legislation exempts veterans already receiving health care (through the Department of Defense or the VA) from being included toward the number of employees that triggers Obamacare’s employer mandate. Employers become eligible for the mandate by having 50 full-time employees, which incentivizes employers to fire people to drop below the threshold. This legislation will alleviate much of this incentive.
The Save American Workers Act corrects the definition of a full-time employee back to any individual working 40 hours per week, which is up 10 hours from Obamacare’s previous 30. This allows companies to restore hours previously cut to avoid triggering Obamacare’s employer mandate and will allow them to return workers to a full-time job and paycheck.
