Congressman Jason Smith issued the following statement today in response to President Obama’s State of the Union address:

“Tonight I hoped we would hear the president set a strategy to work with the House and Senate. Instead, we heard more of how the president wants to go at it alone – not exactly what the Founding Fathers had in mind when it came to law-making.

“I’m still hopeful that we can find common ground to move America forward. That’s why I’m pushing for tax reform to make our tax code fairer and simpler. Americans work hard for their money, so we need to work hard to protect it. Unfortunately the president doesn’t seem to recognize that we need policies that grow America’s economy – not Washington’s economy.

“Those who work hard and play by the rules deserve our support, and I’m working every day on solutions to make government more effective, efficient, and accountable. Now it’s time for the president to leave his ‘my way or the highway’ attitude behind and work with the House and Senate. Together, we can get Washington out of the way so America can prosper.”
