Last week, Congressman Jason Smith sent a letter to the Director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) asking for better communication about the department’s planned purchase of 2,463 acres in Oregon County.  In the letter, Congressman Smith urged DNR to extend the comment period for this project and to host a public meeting so that community members may voice their opinions.

“I am deeply concerned about the implications this purchase would have on our area,” said Congressman Smith. “By making this state-owned land, Oregon County will lose tax revenue vital to the community. DNR should consider the implications that this land purchase would have on the community.”

Congressman Smith has taken issue with DNR’s lack of communication with the community and is asking that the pertinent state, county, and federal officials be informed of the project at a public meeting.

“Elected officials were not even notified of the last community meeting held in Reynolds County, miles away from the area,” said Smith. “DNR needs to have better communication with the folks that live and work here.”

Smith believes that the presence of the officials and community members is fundamental to inform and discuss potential negative effects the project could have on the area.
