HILLSBORO, MO – On May 31, 2017, Congressman Jason Smith met with Hillsboro small business owners to discuss a variety of issues facing their businesses. The roundtable was held at one of the newest small businesses in Hillsboro, the Russell House Restaurant Inn and Brewery.
Small business owners ranging from the food industry to insurance and welding talked with the 8th District Congressman about their concerns.
“We talked about the need for vocational education and affordable healthcare, as well as a simpler, flatter and fairer tax system,” said Congressman Smith. “Spending time with folks back home is the best way for me to learn about what they’re facing so I can share their stories with my colleagues in Congress and take action to make Missourians lives easier.”
“Hearing directly from people who are struggling to get their businesses off the ground or keep them running really hits home. I want nothing more than to see small business owners in our district succeed, which is why I’m pushing for policies in Congress that will enable their success,” said Congressman Smith. “One of the things I love most about small businesses is how much opportunity they provide, it’s one of the best ways to live the American Dream.”
Tom How started his welding business after he was laid off from another job.
“People found out I could fix things and I found out I had a skill people wanted,” How explained. “I have never had a day I didn’t have something I could work on.”
Denny Foster is the owner of Main and Mill Brewing in Festus and praised Congressman Smith for his support of legislation to create tax credits for small businesses in the craft beverage industry.
“That’s a great thing!” said Foster. “That money will allow me to save and put money back into my business.”
The stop in Hillsboro is one of the many roundtables Smith is hosting around his congressional district to hear firsthand what challenges small business owners are facing.
