Last week, the House took an important step to providing relief to workers, farmers, and families by passing the pro-growth, pro-jobs, and pro-American Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act. This legislation locks in key provisions from President Trump’s landmark 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that helped create the strongest economy in my life. Combined those provisions impact over 20 million jobs and help drive up wages and opportunities for American workers while keeping us competitive against adversaries like China. The bill also increases the child tax credit for the first time since 2017 and also allows more families to access the credit by removing the penalty against growing families. The Child Tax Credit was started under Republicans in the 90’s and we doubled it under President Trump in 2017. I am eager to get this bill passed by the Senate and signed into law. Millions of working families and Main Street businesses are counting on Congress to get this done.

Last week, I led dozens of my colleagues on the Ways and Means Committee in sending letters to the Biden administration demanding information on what steps are being taken to identify U.S. charities that may be providing support, encouragement, or potential financial aid to terrorist organizations. U.S. charities that may be funneling financial support to barbaric terrorists while simultaneously reaping the benefits of the U.S. tax code deserve to be punished. I’m glad IRS leaker Charles Edward Littlejohn was sentenced to the maximum allowable sentence for illegally disclosing thousands of Americans’ private tax information, including President Trump’s, to the media. While the single-count charge DOJ brought in this case was wildly insufficient based on this criminal’s multiple thefts and disclosures, punishing him with the maximum allowable sentence still sends a strong message that the U.S. judicial system takes these crimes seriously. 23-year high interest rates are taking a major toll on working-class families and small businesses. That’s why it’s vital for the Senate to work quickly to pass my tax relief package, which puts the needs of small businesses and workers front and center. Small businesses will benefit from $600 billion of tax incentives that give them a fair shot at growing and expanding their business, including meeting payroll and creating jobs. Higher wages and more job opportunities will give working parents an easier time at keeping up with the continued surge in prices on seemingly every basic good.
