Yesterday, Congressman Jason Smith was presented with the Award for Manufacturing Legislative Excellence by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). The award is given to members of Congress who advocate for policies that grow manufacturing and help American manufacturers succeed globally.

One of Congressman Smith’s top priorities in Congress is to make the American Dream easier to achieve in rural America, including strengthening the vital manufacturing sector.

“I am extremely proud that every step of the manufacturing process happens throughout southeast and southern Missouri,” said Congressman Smith. “That’s why I’m re-introducing the SCRUB Act to cut the burdensome regulations that are so detrimental to manufacturers. This bill will make it easier to keep jobs here in the U.S. by reducing overzealous regulations on businesses and requiring agencies to repeal old rules before instituting new ones.”

Congressman Smith originally introduced the SCRUB Act in 2014 to fix the broken regulatory process. “Currently, when new regulations are created by agencies they are heaped on top of 175,000 pages of federal regulations that already exist,” said Congressman Smith. “U.S. businesses are suffocating under the weight of these growing burdens.”

According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), small businesses spend an average of $10,585 per employee each year to comply with federal regulations. For each household in America, the price tag of regulation is more than $15,000. The SCRUB Act will help lessen that burden.

The Manufacturing Legislative Excellence award presentation was hosted by NAM member company Leggett & Platt, Inc. in Cape Girardeau, a manufacturing company that has been in Missouri for more than 130 years.
