Today, Monday, September 23, 2013 Congressman Jason Smith highlighted his original co-sponsorship of H.R. 3076 the James Madison Congressional Accountability Act. This act amends the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) to require that the President, Vice-President, executive branch political appointees, employees of congressional committees, and employees of leadership offices in Congress also have to participate in the American Health Benefit Exchange (a state health insurance exchange created by PPACA). The requirement already applies to Members of Congress and their staff. The act prohibits any government contribution to, or subsidy for, the health insurance coverage of such officials and employees. H.R. 3076 is the House version of senate bill 1497 the No Exemption for Washington from ObamaCare Act being sponsored by Senator David Vitter of Louisiana.
Smith is an original co-sponsor of the legislation that was filed on September 10, 2013 and he has actively been recruiting more members to co-sponsor the legislation.
“Nothing makes my constituents more disappointed in their government than Washington politicians who say one thing and then do something different. I was an original cosponsor of the James Madison Congressional Accountability Act because politicians should not be exempt from ObamaCare while American citizens are subject to the Obama healthcare mandate,” said Smith. “It’s insulting that President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid would force ObamaCare through Congress only to exempt themselves and their staffs from the law. Obama, Pelosi and Reid are no better than my constituents and I will not allow them to be given an ObamaCare exemption.”
Last week Smith joined with other conservative members of the House of Representatives in voting to defund ObamaCare while keeping the federal government open.
