Smith Highlights Major Wins for Missouri Families, Workers, and Seniors in The One Big Beautiful Bill

August 13, 2025

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Jason Smith (Mo.), chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, touted several provisions he secured in the recently enacted One, Big, Beautiful Bill that provide significant tax relief to families, seniors, and workers in southeast and south-central Missouri.

“The One, Big, Beautiful Bill delivers much-needed tax relief to those who need it most: families, workers, and seniors,” said Smith. “It’s exactly what they need after struggling to get by in President Joe Biden’s painful economy, where the price of everyday goods skyrocketed by more than 20%. Thanks to the enhanced Child Tax Credit, families will have more money to afford groceries, clothes, school supplies, and other necessities. The no taxes on tips and overtime provisions will bring relief to thousands of Missourians who work hard and put in long hours to take care of their families. And under this bill, middle- and lower-income seniors will pay no taxes on their benefits. These are just a few examples of how significant and positive an impact this landmark legislation will have on hardworking folks in rural Missouri. The One, Big, Beautiful Bill is nothing short of the greatest piece of working-class tax relief in a generation.”

Smith led the effort in Congress in writing the tax provisions in the One, Big, Beautiful Bill, which delivered the largest tax cut for working families, farmers, and small businesses in U.S. history. Importantly, the legislation delivered a 21% tax cut for families making between $15,000 and $30,000 annually.

Smith played an instrumental role in securing a provision in the One, Big, Beautiful Bill to increase and make permanent the Child Tax Credit (CTC). The legislation increased the CTC, which is claimed by over 70,000 families in Missouri’s 8th Congressional District, to $2,200 per child. The CTC would have been cut in half at the end of 2025 if Congress failed to act.

Missouri families will also get more help with the crushing costs of health care, childcare, and education thanks to a Smith-led provision in the bill that established a new investment account for newborns – formally called Trump accounts – with $1,000 of seed money that will grow exponentially over time. In June, Smith joined President Donald Trump at the White House for an event highlighting the significant impact the investment accounts will have on working-class families.

Another top priority for Smith in writing this bill was locking in the doubled guaranteed standard deduction from the 2017 Trump tax cuts. The One Big Beautiful Bill preserves and enhances the doubled guaranteed standard deduction, giving additional relief to 94% of taxpayers in the district. By expanding the CTC and increasing the doubled guaranteed standard deduction, the average American family will see up to an additional $10,900 in take-home pay.

Smith successfully led the effort to make sure the bill included new provisions proposed by President Trump, including no tax on tips and no tax on overtime. These provisions will benefit thousands of hardworking Missourians. For example, a waitress working at a local diner will get an additional $1,300 in her pocket and a lineman helping restore power after severe storms will pay zero income taxes on his overtime wages – putting upwards of $1,400 in additional money in his pocket. Missouri is home to over 102,000 tipped workers and 1.2 million hourly workers.

Delivering tax relief to the nearly 150,000 seniors in the district was another top priority for Smith. Seniors collecting Social Security will be able to keep more of their money thanks to the new, enhanced standard deduction provision in the One Big Beautiful Bill.
