PERRYVILLE, Mo. – This week, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced $22.4 million in Public Assistance funding for Perry County School District No. 32. Congressman Jason Smith (MO-08) released the following statement applauding the award, which his office fought to secure to help support the reconstruction of Perryville High School after a tornado caused catastrophic damage.

Congressman Smith said, “Last year’s tornado completely destroyed Perryville High School, causing students to attend classes in tents and temporary buildings ever since. I saw the destruction firsthand and it was absolutely devastating, but the resilience and solidarity this community showed in the aftermath blew me away. Day after day, neighbors showed up for neighbors to help each other out and make sure no one had to deal with this disaster alone — that’s what Southeast Missouri is all about.

“I was proud to fight to deliver this funding and ensure this community can rebuild a high school that they’re proud of. Thank you to the Trump Administration and Secretary Mullin for coming through to help the families and students affected, and I’ll keep fighting to make sure Perryville gets all the resources they need to fully recover.”

Background:

• An EF2 tornado struck Perryville High School on March 14, 2025, causing severe structural damage, including a partial collapse.
• The full demolition of the high school building was completed this week.
• Congressman Smith’s office worked closely with FEMA to ensure Perry County School District 32 met the requirements needed to qualify for the Public Assistance funding.
• FEMA approved the school for “Replacement Status” in June 2026, and announced the total funding amount this week following the demolition.
• On August 4, Perry County voters approved Proposition K.I.D.S, raising a levy throughout the district to help fund the rebuild.
• The total costs for the rebuild are estimated to be $60 million, which will be funded by the FEMA award, the levy increase, insurance proceeds, and district funds.
• District officials are finalizing plans for a new 147,500-square-foot facility with roughly 35 classroom and instructional spaces, a student commons, a multipurpose center, a gymnasium, a weight room, and locker rooms.
• Building on the first phase of construction is expected to begin within the next month.
